The Barnes maze is a model invented by American scholar Carol A Barnes in 1979 for testing animal spatial memory. Similar to the water maze and radial arm maze, the Barnes maze is built using the characteristics of rodents that avoid light, prefer darkness, and love to explore. The reinforcement obtained by the animal is to escape from a bright, open platform to a dark, narrow box under the platform. This box is called the target box. After training, the animal learns and remembers the location of the target box. This model has less stress stimulation on the animal. It does not require fasting like the radial arm maze, nor is it as stressful as the water maze. Therefore, it is more commonly used in memory research. It is especially suitable for stress-related memory research and behavioral phenotype research of gene knockout mice.
